Form: Typical vase-shape

Bark: Ridged, but irregular in pattern. When the bark is sectioned, reddish-brown layers are alternated with white / tan layers

Twigs / Buds: Twigs have conspicious zig-zag pattern. Buds are brown and glabrous

Leaves: Inequalateral base, oblong-ovate to elliptical, margin doubly serrate, leaf surface smooth to slightly scabrous

Fruit: Single seeded samara maturing in the spring, notched at apex

Other: Intermediate tolerance. Susceptible to Dutch elm disease
