The most northern hardy of the walnut family, butternuts are prized both for the quality of their nutmeats and for their lumber (also called ``white walnut,'' and noted for its "chatoiance,'' or shimmering quality). These are 1 yr seedlings of locally grown, hardy butternuts. In good soil they are extremely fast growers.
